Low thyroid function, also known as hypothyroidism, is not an uncommon problem. It can lead to various health problems. It can also lead to weight gain.

The thyroid is situated in your neck. It is the body’s major metabolic regulator, so it’s function is vital for your health and for your weight. If it is under functioning the condition is known as hypothyroidism. If it is over producing, it is know as hyperthyroidism.

Some symptoms that can be indicative of low thyroid function include:

weight gain, despite a good diet and exercise programme
fatigue, worn out, tired, low energy
change in body temperature
mood swings
down in the dumps, low spirits, depression
easily irritated
muscle or joint pain
menstrual problems
dry, pale skin
low libido (comes from low energy)
increased hair loss
swelling in hands, feet or face
The thyroid is stimulated to produce its hormones by the pituitary gland, which releases TSH, or thyroid stimulating hormone. TSH triggers the thyroid to produce triodothyronine, also known as T3, and thyroxine, also known as T4.

The medical approach to treating low thyroid function is to keep you on synthetic thyroxine for life. However, when you understand the causes, the solution may be addressed quite easily.

Hypothyroidism is considered to be caused by Hashimoto’s disease, which is an auto immune disease. This means you need to consider everything that has been responsible for attacking or suppressing your immune system.

The typical western diet is unhealthy in the extreme. Highly refined carbohydrates, high protein, chemicals used to produce food, to preserve, to colour, to flavour, etc, high omega 6 content, GM foods, lack of antioxidants all contribute to an unhealthy and overweight body. This means the immune system is not able to work efficiently. It is terribly compromised.

Add to that the common medical drugs, all of which suppress the immune system, and your body has little hope of doing what it can do so well in healthier circumstances.

How can you resolve your low thyroid function? How can you naturally stimulate production of T3 and T4?

Start by addressing your diet. Eat healthy foods. Don’t get caught up in the common habit of eating on the run. Be conscious and mindful of what you put in your body.

Use natural health care, rather than getting quick fixes.
